Volunteer Tutor – ESOL

Provide one-on-one personalized English language instruction to adults whose native language is other than English.
Description
Provide one-on-one, personalized English language acquisition assistance to
adults whose native language is not English. The ideal volunteer for this role will
be responsible for students’ English language acquisition through reading,
writing, speaking, and listening with a focus on grammar and vocabulary skills
building, to help students become conversational keeping in mind each student’s
specific needs and learning pace, while monitoring progress and adapting the
tutoring methods according to the individual student learning goals.
Responsibilities
- Communicate effectively with students by articulating clearly, utilizing appropriate vocabulary, and assessing comprehension through varying methods considering students’ backgrounds, abilities, and learning styles.
- Interact in a respectful, friendly, and patient manner with students from
different cultural backgrounds, and with various levels of language
proficiency. - Explain grammar in an easy-to-understand way without overwhelming
students. - Listen actively and effectively to identify and resolve any learning issues that may arise.
- Work with students to broaden their vocabulary and improve their
pronunciation. - Regularly evaluate the student’s progress through quizzes/tests and
observation to track achievement and help students meet learning goals. - Perform any other duties related to the position as needed.
Requirements
- Be 21 years of age or older.
- Be able to pass an annual background check.
- Have at least a High School Diploma.
- Willing to commit for at least 6 months.
- Willing to volunteer for at least 90 minutes per week.
- Complete the initial and on-going trainings provided by Literacy Phoenix on a timely manner.
- Volunteer only in the locations specified by Literacy Phoenix.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or higher education desired.
- Experience volunteering desired.
- Experience teaching and/or tutoring.
- Proficient with the use of digital literacy applied to instruction and daily life needs.
- Willing to learn and follow directions.
