Volunteer Teacher at Public Library – ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages).

Teach English language, along with two other volunteers, to a small group of adults whose native language is not English, at various City of Phoenix Public Library Branches.

Description

Plan and teach a variety of small group classes to adult learners whose native language is not English. The ideal volunteers for this role will be responsible for teaching English language –reading, writing, speaking, and listening– with a focus on building grammar and vocabulary skills. The goal is to enable students to become conversational in English, keeping in mind their specific needs and learning pace, while monitoring progress and adapting the teaching methods according to the students’ learning goals.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and prepare relevant practical class lessons and monitor students’ performance.
  • Communicate effectively with students by articulating clearly, utilizing appropriate vocabulary, and assessing comprehension through varying methods considering students’ backgrounds, abilities, and learning styles.
  • Interact in a respectful, friendly, and patient manner with students from different cultural backgrounds, and with various levels of language proficiency.
  • Explain grammar in an easy-to-understand way without overwhelming students.
  • Listen actively and effectively to identify and resolve any learning issues that may arise.
  • Work with students to broaden their vocabulary and improve their pronunciation.
  • Regularly evaluate the students’ progress through quizzes/tests and observation to track achievement and help students meet learning goals.
  • Complete and maintain appropriate student attendance sheets and ensure timely submission to library staff.
  • Perform effective classroom management strategies to enhance student learning.
  • Ensure teaching materials provided to you, by Literacy Phoenix, are maintained in an organized and orderly manner.
  • Collaborate with library staff to ensure the library properties, including chairs, tables, etc., are always properly utilized by students while in your presence.
  • Perform any other duties related to the position as needed.

Requirements

  • Be 21 years of age or older.
  • Be able to pass an annual background check.
  • Have at least a High School Diploma.
  • Willing to commit for at least 6 months.
  • Willing to volunteer for at least 90 minutes per week.
  • Complete the initial and on-going trainings provided by Literacy Phoenix on a timely manner.
  • Volunteer only in the locations specified by Literacy Phoenix.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher education desired.
  • Experience volunteering desired.
  • Experience teaching and/or tutoring.
  • Proficient with the use of digital literacy applied to instruction and daily life needs.
  • Willing to learn and follow directions.
