The Adult Basic Education / Adult Secondary Education (ABE/ASE) Instructor provides instruction to adult learners to up their basic skills and obtain their High School Equivalency (HSE) Diploma by passing the GED test and to be successful in work, educational, family, and civic life.
Position Overview
We are seeking an ABE/ASE (Adult Basic Education/Adult Secondary Education) Instructor who is passionate about helping adult learners develop basic skills. In this role, you will provide instruction in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Civics to support learners in obtaining the HSE (High School Equivalency) diploma by passing the GED test, becoming successful in work, education, family, and civic life. You will help prepare students to transition to career pathways and/or post-secondary education. Responsibilities
- Plan, organize, and deliver instruction to adult learners by developing lesson plans, preparing instructional materials, presenting course content, and adapting instruction to meet learners’ needs across all assigned subject areas.
- Teach integrated skills including technology and career readiness as part of the curriculum.
- Administer assessments and evaluate learner progress.
- Develop and manage individualized learner study plans.
- Monitor educational gains, set goals, and track learner progress.
- Maintain accurate records, including attendance and assessment data.
- Participate in professional development and required training provided by Literacy Phoenix and the Arizona Department of Education.
- Travel between two Phoenix-area locations as needed
- Perform additional duties as assigned, including substituting, delivering presentations, developing curriculum, and providing administrative support.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree preferred in Education or related field
- Eligible for or currently holds an Arizona Adult Education Teaching Certificate
- Valid IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card
- Experience teaching elementary, secondary, post-secondary, and/or adult education
- Three (3) years of related experience and/or training, or three (3) years of verified experience as a teacher, tutor, or aide in an adult education program or K–12 setting
Qualifications
- Knowledge of core subject areas, including English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.
- Ability to work with individuals from diverse cultural and educational backgrounds
- Knowledge of effective instructional strategies and teaching techniques
- Strong classroom management and interpersonal communication skills
- Experience teaching Basic and Secondary Education at all levels, including literacy, basic skills, adult education, and test preparation
- Proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Office, internet use, and electronic communication
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently and as part of a team
- Willingness to learn and adapt to different systems and processes
Hours and Location
- Monday through Thursday, 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and Fridays, 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM
- The assigned work location may vary between our two locations, based on organizational needs.
