The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Instructor provides instruction to prepare participants to successfully develop reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in English, and to be successful in work, educational, family, and civic life.

Position Overview

We are seeking an ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Instructor who is passionate about helping adult learners develop their English language skills. In this role, you will provide instruction in reading, writing, listening, and speaking to support learners in becoming successful in work, education, family, and civic life. You will help prepare students to transition to career pathways and/or post-secondary education. This is an excellent opportunity for an educator who is dedicated, supportive of diverse learners, and committed to fostering student growth and success in the classroom.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and deliver English language instruction to adult learners.
  • Teach integrated skills including technology, basic mathematics, and civics as part of the curriculum.
  • Support the development of reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in English.
  • Administer assessments and evaluate learner progress.
  • Develop and manage individualized learner study plans.
  • Monitor educational gains, set goals, and track learner progress.
  • Maintain accurate records, including attendance and assessment data.
  • Participate in professional development and required training provided by Literacy Phoenix and the Arizona Department of Education.
  • Travel between two Phoenix-area locations as needed
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, including substituting, delivering presentations, developing curriculum, and providing administrative support.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred in Education, English, or related field
  • Eligible for or currently holds an Arizona Adult Education Teaching Certificate
  • Valid IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card
  • Experience teaching elementary, secondary, post-secondary, and/or adult education
  • Three (3) years of related experience and/or training, or three (3) years of verified experience as a teacher, tutor, or aide in an adult education program or K–12 setting

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of English language components: listening, speaking, reading, and writing
  • Ability to work with individuals from diverse cultural and educational backgrounds
  • Knowledge of effective instructional strategies and teaching techniques
  • Strong classroom management and interpersonal communication skills
  • Experience teaching ESOL at all levels, including literacy, basic skills, adult education, and test preparation
  • Proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Office, internet use, and electronic communication
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to different systems and processes
